4 Pieces of Apparel You Need to Give You a Leg Up in Fishing Tournaments
When it comes time to take part in a fishing tournament, you want to have every advantage possible. Being hot and sweaty is distracting, taking away from your concentration in trying to catch fish. With the proper performance fishing gear, you can give yourself an edge up over the competition. Here are some pieces of apparel that you will want for your next fishing tournament.
Performance Shirts to Combat the Weather
When it comes to fishing clothes, one of the most important parts is having a professional-grade, high-performance shirt. You will want a shirt with long sleeves to protect you from the sun’s rays. The fabric should be rated UPF 50+ to ensure that the shirt will stop 98% of the sun’s rays, meaning you will have good protection against sunburns. Find a shirt that combines a UPF rating with moisture-wicking fabric, which will keep you cool and dry. When you are comfortable, you can better concentrate on fishing.
Professional Fishing Masks to Protect Your Face
Another piece of fishing apparel that will give you a leg up, and protect your face, is a fishing mask. Look for a mask that also has a UPF rating to keep your skin protected from sunburn. One with a vent in front of your mouth will ensure your sunglasses won’t fog up. You can also find masks that offer ventilation, which is perfect if you are fishing in a tournament that uses boats. Superior ventilation gives you airflow, especially when you're moving at speed on the open water. While your competition will be sweating in the summer heat, you will be sitting cool while casting a fishing line.
Polarized Sunglasses to See Under the Surface
Invest in a high-quality set of polarized sunglasses. While your competitors might have sunglasses that shield their eyes, polarized sunglasses take it a step further. They cut through the glare on the surface of the water, letting you see the fish underneath. Polarized sunglasses can help you spot fish and underwater features, giving you an idea of where to cast a line.
Comfortable Pants or Shorts for Utility and Stretch
Look for pants or shorts for fishing that provide exceptional mobility and stretch. Again, you want to find pants or shorts that have UPF 50+ to block UVA and UVB rays. Your pants should also be made from water repellent or waterproof material that is still comfortable. There is nothing worse than being at a competition and getting wet, knowing you will be miserable and uncomfortable in clothes that don’t dry quickly. The pants should also have enough pockets to provide utility and storage. You can also find shorts with side zippers that provide extra ventilation under the hot sun.
Growing up in Florida, Kent Hickman would take every opportunity to get out on the water and fish. Fishing has been his passion since he was young, and he eventually decided to wade into the professional pools, joining the tournament circuit. While at tournaments, he encountered a problem: He wasn’t able to find fishing gear that could meet the rigorous demands of professional anglers. The unrelenting Florida sun meant he needed fishing apparel that could keep him cool and also protect him from the sun’s rays and other elements. In 2009, he decided to make the apparel himself, founding Gillz® to create stylish shirts for fishing, fishing masks, accessories, and other high-quality fishing apparel for his fellow anglers.
